Educational adviser for the Medical Practice in Adult Learning Disability training programme

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is seeking to appoint an educational adviser for the Medical Practice in Adult Learning Disability training programme 2025.

The Medical Practice in Adult Learning Disability postgraduate certificate (PGCert) is developed and delivered by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and Edge Hill University (EHU). The PGCert consists of two modules of 30 credits each and takes 15 months to complete.

The first module is clinically focused and assessed via workplace based assessments as well as four reflective academic submissions. The second module is theoretical and taught by Edge Hill staff only. It is assessed by writing up a service development or audit.

Remit

The educational adviser (EA) role is shared between several clinicians with a specialist interest in the medical needs of adults with a learning disability. EAs work in partnership with Edge Hill University and the RCP to ensure successful delivery of the course to all learners.

The EA’s work will include:

  • Being one of the team to deliver the face-to-face induction day and monthly online tutorials for the first 6-month module, with a combination of delivering lectures, chairing talks by guest speakers and facilitating small group discussions
  • Being part of the team to recruit and involve academic guest speakers to support the tutorials as appropriate
  • Working with our experts by experience in the delivery of teaching
  • Reviewing and marking academic writing submissions and learner electronic portfolios (training and support will be provided for this)
  • Reviewing and acting upon feedback from learners with regards to course content and delivery.

Benefits

The RCP provides remuneration of £6,000 per year for the role and will cover travel and accommodation costs for the in person induction day in Liverpool.

EAs will receive academic support and guidance from Edge Hill University as well as administrative support from the RCP.

We offer the opportunity to network with colleagues in this unique area of medicine, keep your knowledge up to date, take part in challenging discussions, promote multidisciplinary working and continuing professional development. By getting involved you can shape the future of the medical care of adults with a learning disability.

This role will be for 2 years in the first instance, commencing in February 2025, to cover the next two NHS England funded cohorts of the programme. There will be review after the first year to ensure both parties are happy to continue for a second year.

Time commitment

EAs will meet during the first module February – August in short online catch ups and will deliver the in person induction day in February and online half day tutorials on Tuesdays in March, April, May, June and July. Marking will take place July-September.

The time commitment equates to one PA/session per week on average, with most work undertaken during the first module and less time needed over remaining part of year. From September to December, EAs will be involved in reviewing course applications for the following year.
