Overview

As a new consultant in the NHS you will be responsible for the delivery of expert clinical care while being involved in activities including teaching, management, the running departments and development of local services. These workshops provide you with the opportunity to gain relevant knowledge and skills in order to make the best possible start to your consultant career.

The workshops include:

•    identifying the opportunities and challenges encountered by new consultants
•    utilising approaches to getting established in the department
•    analysing challenging situations from the perspective of power bases
•    supporting your team at each stage of its development
•    your role in the context of the NHS structure
•    identifying evidence to inform appraisal and job planning.

Please Note: Delegates must attend both workshops in order to complete the course.

The programme is designed to run over two non-consecutive separate days; delegates should attend the days in order.

Sessions

Day 1 – Starting out as a consultant

This workshop explores the rewards and challenges of becoming a consultant. It seeks to address the range of knowledge and skills that you will require in order to establish yourself in your first consultant post, including:

•    the structure of the NHS
•    clinical governance
•    risk management and clinical incidents
•    how to deal with complaints
•    clinical coding.

There will also be the opportunity to consider your personal qualities and how they impact on others around you. Many of whom will look to you for cues on appropriate attitudes and behaviours in the healthcare setting.

Day 2 – Developing yourself, developing the service

Having survived the initial stages of becoming a consultant, you will be eager to continue to develop yourself personally and professionally. As well as making important changes to the service that you offer to patients.

This workshop explores aspects such as personal development, time management, developing a portfolio career, the role of commissioners, developing a business case, and people management skills such as influencing and negotiating.

Important information prior to an Online workshop

Online events include small group discussions and interactive activities. Delegates will get the maximum benefit by being able to fully participate. This means:

  1. When making your booking we recommend you use an email associated with a Microsoft account. We require delegates to be logged into a Microsoft account to be able to fully participate in small group discussions and interactive activities. You will also need to be logged in to Microsoft for the RCP systems to recognise you and be able to issue you with a Certificate of Attendance.
  2. Some organisations’ security settings make it difficult to fully participate. If you have previously experienced issues accessing slides, video, audio, or breakout rooms whilst in Teams, please speak to your IT department prior to the event to troubleshoot. You can also contact the RCP to test-run the connections prior to the event. Most NHS accounts are linked to a Microsoft account and generally do not experience issues using Teams. Often home/personal emails are not linked to Microsoft and may not allow full participation.
  3. You will have the best experience joining the event using a desktop or laptop. Mobile phones and tablets typically do not allow full participation. For best results ensure your device is up-to date with any required software updates.
  4. You will need a microphone and a camera to fully participate.
