RCP Update in medicine conferences are held across the UK and are delivered by the RCP regional team. These events are designed to provide high-quality education and allow attendees to stay abreast of clinical advancements in medicine, develop professional skills and network with colleagues.
Please note, this is a face-to-face event. We do not provide online access for this series of events.

The Bristol hotel is well connected to transport links. It is around 15 - 20 minute's walk from Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station. Alternatively the bus service no. 70 runs from Temple Meads along Redcliffe way and stops a few minutes from the hotel.
There is a small on-site carpark on Prince Street which operates on a first come first served basis. Delegates can register their car registration with reception on departure to have parking tickets validated to £12. For those driving, please note the hotel is located within Bristol's Clean Air Zone, meaning some vehicles will have to pay a charge to travel within the area.

Dr Irmak Salt studied medicine in her home country of Turkey and graduated in 2017. Irmak subsequently started neurology and stroke training in a tertiary stroke centre in Istanbul and completed her training in 2022 before moving to Bristol. She started working in Southmead Hospital stroke department and has been working as a specialty doctor in stroke medicine for the past year.
Dr Jay Suntharalingam is a consultant respiratory physician at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust where he set up and now leads a regional pulmonary hypertension (PH) centre in collaboration with the Royal Free Hospital. Prior to taking up his post in Bath, Jay completed an MD thesis in PH at Royal Papworth Hospital, which led to several publications. He has continued his research interest as a consultant, currently looking at screening techniques to improve earlier detection of PH. Jay also represents the national PH community in a role on NHS England's Specialised Comissioning Reference Group for Respiratory.
Dr Clare Barlow is a consultant medical oncologist specialising in the treatment of melanoma and ovarian cancer.
Clare trained at St George's Hospital, London and underwent specialist training in medical oncology at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. She was awarded a PhD in moleular pharmacology in 2009, following laboratory-based research at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, sponsored by a CRUK grant.
Clare was appointed to her role at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton in 2009 and is lead for the immunotherapy service at Musgrove Park, chair of the Southwest Immunotherapy Group, (regional immunotherapy forum), immunotherapy representative for the UK SACT Board and a member of the Board of Trustees for the IOCN (Immuno-Oncology Clinical Network).
Dr Marina Morgan is a consultant in clinical microbiology and infection, senior lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School and honorary medical adviser to the Lee Spark NF Foundation.
Dr Dushen Tharmaratnam has been working as a consultant cardiologist since October 2012 since graduating from the University of Bristol Medical School in 1998. Dushen became an RCP member in 2002 followed by fellowship status in 2018.
Dushen's specialist registrar training in cardiology involved rotations at Royal Cornwall Hospital and Derriford Hospital, but he has also experienced cardiology training at three other tertiary centres: Bristol Heart Institute, St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. His practice centres on all aspects of general cardiology and he is interested in preventetive cardiology and its role in reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in the wider population.
He is current the British Cardiovascular Society/ Royal College of Physicians regional specialty adviser for cardiology in the Peninsula region.
Dr Izak Heys was born and raised in South Africa and trained at the university of Cape Town completing his infectious diseases training at the university of Stellenbosch in 2012. Dr Heys worked in a resource limited setting gaining experience in HIV, TB and antimicrobial stewardship before moving to the UK in 2016 when he joined Southmead hospital in Bristol, now working there as an infectious diseases physician. Southmead hospital is a recently accreditted Airborne High Consequence Infectious Disease Centre where Dr Heys currently joint leads this service. His interests include tropical infections, snakebites and global health. Dr Heys volunteers with Dharura: Global Emergency Care supporting antimicrobial stewardship to a regional hospital and clinics in Kenya.
Dr Albert Power is a consultant nephrologist and research lead at the Richard Bright Renal Unit at Southmead hospital in Bristol. He is the national clinical advisor for dialysis and co-lead for the South-West renal network. Dr Power's specialist interests include cardiovascular disease in people with advanced renal impairment.
Dr Danijela Tatovic is an internal medicine specialist in Belgrade and completed specialist training in diabetes/endocrinology in Bristol, and obtained a PhD pertaining to T1D immunology from Cardiff university.
Danijela continued to pursue her interest in clinical research and established herself as a key investigator in a large number of translational and early phase academic trials in T1D that resulted in a number of publications in high impact journals including Nature Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, Frontiers in Immunology, Journal of Immunology.
Dr Rob Andrews is an academic clinician at the University of Exeter and an honorary consultant physician at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
At the University, he leads a research group focused on the role of diet and physical activity in the prevention and management of diabetes and obesity.
In Taunton, Dr Andrews heads the diabetes and obesity research team. Until recently, he was the medical lead for a large multidisciplinary weight management service, this holistic service provides specialist dietary and exercise programmes, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery, as well as clinics for individuals with eating disorders and post-surgical complications. In recognition of the quality and scope of this service, Taunton has been designated an International Centre of Excellence.
