Medical Training Initiative – Resources for applicants

The medical training initiative (MTI) extends its support to international medical graduates (IMGs) pursuing short-term training endeavours within the United Kingdom. With the overarching aim of fostering their professional development while envisioning their eventual return to their respective home countries upon completion of the training period.

Aligned with this objective, the MTI facilitates the crucial process of general medical council (GMC) registration, ensuring that eligible candidates meet the necessary regulatory standards to engage in medical practice within the UK. Moreover, the program assists in obtaining the government authorised exchange visa, thereby streamlining the immigration process for IMGs embarking on this enriching training opportunity.

Important update: application fee adjustment starting 2 September 2024

We would like to inform you of an important update regarding our application fees. Starting from 2 September, the fee for all applications will increase to include the Value Added Tax (VAT).

This adjustment is necessary to comply with the regulatory requirements and to ensure the continued high standard of our services. The updated fee structure will reflect the inclusion of VAT, which will be applied to all new applications submitted on or after the effective date.

From 2 September the new fee structure will be as follows:

Initial fee – £250 + VAT = £300

Application fee – £600 + VAT = £720

We understand that this may impact your planning, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Our commitment to providing exceptional service and support to our members remains our top priority.

For any questions or further information, please do not hesitate to contact the MTI Team at mti@rcp.ac.uk.

Benefits of MTI

Participating in the MTI offers a multitude of benefits for IMGs seeking to enhance their clinical skills, broaden their professional horizons, and contribute to global healthcare:

  • Clinical Experience in a high-quality setting: IMGs enrolled in the MTI have the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience in healthcare institutions across the UK. These placements provide exposure to advanced medical technologies, diverse patient populations, and best practices in healthcare delivery.
  • Professional development and skill enhancement: Through structured supervision and mentorship, MTI participants can improve their clinical skills, expand their medical knowledge, and refine their diagnostic and therapeutic abilities.
  • International networking and collaboration: Through collaboration and networking among IMGs, healthcare professionals, and academic institutions, MTI participants have the chance to exchange ideas, share experiences, and forge valuable connections.
  • Cultural and professional integration: Immersing in the UK healthcare system enables IMGs to acclimate to cultural nuances, clinical practices, and ethical standards prevalent in the British medical community. This exposure fosters cultural competence, enhances communication skills, and promotes a deeper understanding of healthcare delivery in an international context.
  • Contribution to global health equity: By participating in the MTI, IMGs play a vital role in addressing healthcare workforce shortages, both in their home countries and internationally. The skills and knowledge acquired during their UK placement can be applied to improve healthcare delivery, enhance patient outcomes, and promote health equity worldwide.
