FAQs

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Medical Training Initiative (MTI) supports international medical graduates (IMGs) who are seeking short-term training opportunities in the UK. Doctors can come to the UK for up to 24 months under the UK Border Agency’s immigration rules, before returning to their home countries. The RCP London’s MTI scheme can sponsor doctors who are seeking to train in physician specialities.

This is a mutually beneficial scheme that provides junior doctors from all over the world with the opportunity to work and train in the UK, while giving hospitals a high-quality, longer-term alternative to using locums to fill rota gaps. The scheme facilitates General Medical Council (GMC) registration for the candidates, and can assist with a Government Authorised Exchange (GAE - previously Tier 5) visa if required.

For the employing bodies:

•    An opportunity to recruit excellent IMGS, who can contribute a wide range of clinical skills and teaching expertise to UK medical practice
•    Support for the Trust with the necessary paperwork required for GMC sponsorship
•    Administrative support when applying for the GAE visa, if required
•    Guidance on creating job descriptions with adequate educational components, study leave opportunities and supervision for the trainee
•    Guidance for how best to support your MTI trainees when in post
•    Opportunities to build links with international hospitals and countries seeking to send their trainees for valuable NHS experience.
