New Consultants Committee
The RCP New Consultants Committee (NCC) is dedicated to and comprised of new consultants who are working in the NHS and whose date of first consultant appointment was less than five years ago.
The committee is made up of early career consultants from across the UK, plus a chair and deputy chair who act as RCP ambassadors in their regions. It was established to represent the needs, interests and views of RCP members and fellows who are new consultants or transitioning to this career stage.
Representatives for each region/nation are elected by and represent new consultants, both within the RCP on council and in committees.
Areas of work and projects
The NCC’s remit focuses on:
- representing the views of new consultants to the RCP and to inform new consultants of RCP decisions and activities that relate to them
- promoting the involvement of new consultants in RCP activities
- acting as a focus for issues of self-regulation, clinical governance and clinical excellence/quality as they relate to new consultants
- reviewing and providing advice on the continuing medical education, professional development and career progression of new consultants
- developing general advice and resources to support new consultants both before appointment and during their first five years in post, such as their involvement with RCP Launchpad, ensuring that the content also includes collaborative topics for SAS doctors colleagues
- supporting the development of events and networking meetings, including New consultant forums and the biennial national conference
- providing new consultant input and advice to RCP boards, committees and working parties as appropriate.
Meetings and membership
The NCC contains seats for 17 regional representatives, co-opted members, chair and deputy chair. Members meet three times a year and conduct discussions among themselves with senior RCP officers.
There are two virtual meetings and one face-to-face meeting per year, though many of the NCC’s discussions take place outside of these meetings, via email.

Meet our New Consultants Committee representatives
Dr James Norman
New Consultants Committee chair
James is a inclusion health and general internal medicine consultant in London.
James was chosen to represent the Central and North East London region in 2023. He is a full-time consultant in general internal medicine and the new specialty of inclusion health, having trained in infectious diseases. He was a graduate entry medic in Nottingham and has spent time as a junior doctor in the Midlands, before returning home to London on an ID/GIM training number, completing his training in 2020 and taking an initial role in the Imperial Trust.
Since joining University College Hospital in 2021, he has been working on identifying the health needs of the inclusion health population in the hope of improving their health outcomes and reducing their usage of emergency services. On top of this, he has a great deal of interest in medical education and both clinical and educational supervision. He hopes to unite all these interests in promoting better management of the inclusion health population across London, the United Kingdom and potentially beyond.
Dr Fahd Ali Khan
New Consultants Committee representative observer
Dr Fahd Ali Khan is a consultant rheumatologist based in the north-east of England. He has a broad interest in the diagnosis and management of rheumatological conditions, alongside a strong commitment to medical education, quality improvement and service development.
Having recently completed his transition from specialty training to consultant practice, Fahd is passionate about supporting doctors in the early years of consultancy and ensuring that the views of new consultants are represented at a national level. He is particularly interested in workforce development, clinician wellbeing and improving patient access to high-quality rheumatology services.
Through his role on the RCP New Consultants Committee, he hopes to contribute to shaping policy, sharing best practice and supporting colleagues as they navigate the opportunities and challenges of consultant practice.
Dr Eithar Deyab
New Consultant Committee representative – London Central and North East
Dr Eithar Deyab is a consultant in diabetes, endocrinology and general internal medicine at Whipps Cross University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust.
Eithar completed her specialist training in North Central London, obtaining her CCT in diabetes and endocrinology in early 2026. She originally trained in Sudan before coming to the UK, holds an MD in clinical internal medicine, and is bilingual in Arabic and English. During her training, she held a clinical research fellowship in data science at University College London Hospital, where she developed a keen interest in how technology can be used to improve patient care.
Since taking up her consultant post at Whipps Cross, Eithar has led quality improvement work in diabetes care for patients on haemodialysis, including their access to diabetes technology, and has been actively involved in waiting list recovery and outpatient service redesign. Alongside her clinical work, she is the founder of a free educational platform for doctors, focusing on wellbeing, preventing burnout and supporting those returning to practice or training after a gap. She is a mentor on the Society for Endocrinology EndoExchange Programme and has a wider interest in coaching and medical education.
Eithar is a strong advocate for the mental health and wellbeing of doctors, particularly those in the early years of consultant life – a transition she believes deserves far more structured support than it currently receives. Having previously served as a trainee representative in the north central London deanery, she now brings that same commitment to the New Consultants Committee, alongside her interests in medical education, digital health, and making the consultant role sustainable and rewarding from the outset.
Dr Gwenno Edwards
New Consultants Committee representative - North Wales
Dr Gwenno Edwards is an acute medicine and renal consultant based in North Wales. Gwenno trained at Cardiff University and completed her postgraduate training across Wales. During her training, Gwenno gained experience of advocating for her colleagues as the trainee representative for Wales for both renal medicine and the Group 1 medical specialties, and prior to that as an associate college tutor.
Gwenno completed training in 2024 and took up her first consultant post in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.
She is involved in medical student training through Cardiff and Bangor medical schools, and is particularly interested in improving medical training locally. Her main goal currently is to develop local acute medical services.
She is looking forward to represent the views of new consultant colleagues across North Wales, and to improve awareness and access for new consultants to professional development opportunities and support.
Dr Abidullah Khan
New Consultant Committee representative – Mersey
Dr Abidullah Khan is a consultant physician, currently working at Royal Liverpool University Hospital. He has over a decade of clinical experience across Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Holding MBBS, FCPS (Pakistan), MRCP, FRCP, CCT and DipUKMP qualifications, Abid has developed a broad and diverse perspective on healthcare delivery, medical education and clinical leadership through his work in two distinct healthcare systems.
He has made significant academic contributions, authoring more than 36 publications including original research articles, case series, quality improvement projects and conference abstracts. His commitment to education is reflected in his roles as an academic adviser with Liverpool School of Medicine and as a clinical and educational supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, supporting the development of future generations of physicians.
Abid has demonstrated a sustained commitment to professional engagement and leadership. He previously served on the Young Diabetologists & Endocrinologists’ Forum (YDEF) Committee and currently serves as diabetes lead within regional specialist cancer and cardiology services, driving improvements in the care of people with diabetes across complex clinical pathways. He has special interests in diabetes technology and helps to deliver regional insulin pump service. His main focus is diabetes technology in old age and potential quality in the uptake of diabetes technology.
Abid is passionate about advancing standards in clinical practice, education and research, and is actively pursuing his ambition to become an MRCP(UK) PACES examiner. A strong advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion, he is committed to fostering a healthcare environment that promotes opportunity, representation and excellence for all healthcare professionals and patients.
Through his clinical, academic and leadership activities, Abid continues to contribute to the advancement of medicine and the development of the wider medical profession.
Dr Udit Mittal
New Consultants Committee representative – Oxford and Thames Valley
Dr. Udit Mittal, MBBS MRCP(UK) FRCP(London) FRCP(Edin), is a Consultant gastroenterologist at Oxford University Hospitals. He specialises in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with a particular focus on early cancer detection, complex polyp resection, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
His subspecialist interests include familial gastrointestinal cancers and IBD. After earning his medical degree in 2006 in India, he trained in internal medicine in Sheffield before completing his gastroenterology and endoscopy specialisation at Oxford.
Dr Kamran Mushtaq
New Consultants Committee representative – Wessex
Kamran Mushtaq is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University Hospital Southampton. He completed his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training in Qatar in an ACGME-I accredited training program in 2021 and achieved CESR in 2024.
Kamran has a special interest in advanced luminal endoscopy and the role of AI in video capsule endoscopy. He completed a post-CCT advanced endoscopy fellowship in 2023. He is also passionate about training and simulation in endoscopy, having completed a fellowship as an advanced endoscopy and education fellow in 2024. He currently serves as endoscopy governance lead, with a particular focus on human factors and patient safety.
Kamran is committed to representing and empowering new consultants, drawing on personal experiences to advocate for the professional development and wellbeing of new consultant colleagues especially those from diverse backgrounds.
Dr Matt Pavitt
New Consultants Committee representative – Kent, Surrey and Sussex
Dr Matt Pavitt is a consultant in respiratory medicine at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust in Brighton. Working hard to improve airways disease and breathlessness.
Matt undertook his undergraduate degree at St George's Hospital Medical School and went on to train in respiratory medicine in HE KSS including 4-years at the Royal Brompton Hospital. In 2021, he completed his PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College) researching exercise limitation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Matt hopes, that through his involvement in the new consultant committee, he can represent the views of new consultant colleagues in Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
When not at work, Matt can be found cycling around Sussex and Surrey!
Dr Dena Pitrola
New Consultant Committee representative – South Wales
Dr Dena Pitrola is an acute medicine and renal consultant in University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. She was appointed in July 2024, having completed her undergraduate and postgraduate training across Wales. She is currently the acute medicine undergraduate specialty training lead and has an MSc in medical education.
She is honoured by the opportunity to represent her colleagues, having been one of the first associate college tutors, and has taken on both formal and informal roles working with the RCP tutors over the years.
Dr Kerri Ramsay
New Consultant Committee representative – East Midlands
Dr Kerri Ramsay is a consultant in geriatric medicine in Nottinghamshire.
Kerri completed her higher specialist training within the East Midlands via the CESR route and gained her CCT in April 2024. She has a PGDip in Medical Education and is a consultant in geriatric medicine at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Her special interests are movement disorders and medical education.
Kerri was appointed to the New Consultants Committee in July 2026 and has previously been an RCP associate college tutor. She is also the Foundation Training Programme director at Sherwood Forest Hospitals.
Through her role on the RCP New Consultants Committee, Kerri is keen to build on the resources already available to new consultants and contribute to the upcoming new consultant forums. She recognises the transition from trainee to consultant is a bigger leap than many anticipate and wants to help bridge the gap for those approaching CCT or who have recently been appointed to their first consultant post. She will embrace the opportunity to represent the voice of new consultants in the East Midlands.

Dr Anna Street
New Consultants Committee representative – Eastern
Dr Anna Street is a consultant in geriatric medicine in the East of England. She has previously studied and trained in the region, spending several years as the regional representative for geriatric medicine training.
She is particularly interested in perioperative geriatric medicine and in end of life care. She sits on the committee for the British Geriatric Society end of life care special interest group.
She is interested in online learning and has helped to produce e-learning modules for Health Education East of England, the British Geriatric Society and the Personalised Care Institute.
Dr Lucy Turner
New Consultant Committee representative - Yorkshire
Dr Lucy Turner is a consultant hepatologist working at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
Having trained largely within the Yorkshire region, Dr Turner completed her training in 2023, following being awarded an MD focused on methotrexate related liver injury.
Dr Natalie Vanderpant
New Consultant Committee representative – London North West
Natalie trained in North West London and is a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. She has a particular interest in supporting patients with type 1 diabetes using diabetes technology including insulin pumps and hybrid closed loop technology as well as driving improvements in inpatient diabetes care.
She also has a strong interest in medical leadership and was a national medical director's clinical fellow at the care quality commission (CQC) in the 2023/24 cohort.
She was previously part of the RCP's resident doctor committee and is delighted to continue to support the work of the college as part of the RCP new consultants committee.
Dr Leigh Wilson
New Consultants Committee representative observer
Dr Leigh Wilson qualified from Newcastle University in 2014, with an intercalated master’s degree in clinical education. He regularly teaches undergraduate and postgraduate learners alongside his other roles, which include PACES tutoring and writing GMC PLAB/MLA content.
Leigh has experience representing doctors at local, regional and national levels through work with universities, local employers, the RCP and BMA. His specialties are geriatric medicine and internal medicine, with a particular interest in frailty and liaison geriatrics. He has also gained experience in leadership, service improvement and policy development through roles including the RCP Chief Registrar Programme and the National Medical Director’s Fellowship.
Leigh has joined the RCP New Consultants Committee as an observer prior to obtaining his CCT in September. Through the committee he aims to support work that improves access to practical tools for new consultants, promotes meaningful engagement with RCP resources, and strengthens regional links between new consultants and existing RCP networks.
Dr Charlotte Lee
New Consultants Committee representative – London (South)
Dr Charlotte Lee is a consultant in palliative medicine in South London, having completed specialty training in London in 2026.
She has also completed a Darzi Fellowship, combining her interests in health leadership, quality improvement and health inequalities. Her project focused on addressing organisational culture and collaboration with communities.
Charlotte has been an RCP Resident Doctor Committee representative and on the RCP Health Inequalities Advisory Group. As part of the NCC, she hopes to improve the working lives and wellbeing of her colleagues and future new consultants, ensuring that their voice is represented and working to support a more sustainable future.

Recruitment into the New Consultant Committee takes place once annually. Applications will re-open in Spring 2027.
