We’ve worked together with other organisations committed to improvements in stroke care to develop a bespoke programme to meet the needs of staff working in integrated service delivery networks (ISDNs).
ISDNs have been created to reduce the geographical variation in processes of care and outcomes across the stroke pathway. The GIRFT Stroke Leadership Academy is a bespoke multiprofessional stroke specific leadership development programme for up to 30 people a year that builds leadership capacity within ISDNs, which in turn collaborate with integrated delivery boards (ICBs).
The programme supports the following recommendation in the GIRFT Stroke Programme national specialty report:
To ensure that ISDNs ‘lead and engage in activities to promote leadership and culture across their networks, with a particular focus on:
- the importance of culture and leadership in successful stroke teams
- addressing systemic biases in the current leadership of stroke teams, actively promoting both medical and non-medical leadership
- emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of high-quality stroke care and diversity of leadership
- promoting collaboration across the stroke pathway, including diagnostics, rehabilitation, and working with the third sector; and
- development and implementation of a ‘Stroke Leadership Academy’”.
This recommendation is fully supported by the NHSE national stroke programme, British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP) and the Stroke Association.
The RCP worked with GIRFT, TSA, BIASP, UCLan and the NHS Leadership Academy to develop the programme and has commissioned The King’s Fund to deliver part of it.
Delivery model
The programme runs over 12 months and consists of four 2-day in-person sessions with paid-for accommodation to encourage networking. It culminates in an accredited assignment where learners produce a short, structured reflection on their role as leader at the end of the course.
Four 2-day sessions with accommodation provided at the RCP’s state-of-the-art facilities in The Spine, Liverpool, including a session led by The King's Fund on ‘self as leader’, a 1-day and a half-day online workshop, plus in-person briefing workshops, linked to the annual UKSF conference.

These will cover the following overarching themes:
- Understanding the system
- Self as leader

Ongoing peer support will also be developed through an action learning sets (ALS) programme exploring practical ways to address challenges faced in the workplace.
