Fundamentals of leading others for doctors - 23 January 2026

Stepping into medical leadership can feel daunting but is also crucial in shaping the future of healthcare and is of growing importance for the career development of all doctors.
This workshop is designed to empower you with the essential organisational leadership skills needed to navigate complex healthcare systems, advocate for your team, and champion equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This workshop is primarily aimed at resident doctors of all specialties (ST1 - ST7) and SAS doctors of equivalent experience. It would also be beneficial for those who are new to leadership roles, or those with no prior leadership training.
Consultants and SAS doctors of equivalent experience may attend, generally benefitting as a refresher course or if they have not attended any previous leadership training.
Alternatively, there are two workshops that are more appropriate for consultants and equivalent SAS doctors:
Developing yourself as a senior medical leader
Leading teams and culture in senior medical roles
By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- develop a practical use for leadership styles
- recognise and utilise the strengths of others in clinical teams
- identify ways to improve motivation, engagement and energy within teams
- explore ways to overcome the challenges of leading others
- discuss ways to facilitate a culture of psychological safety
- debate the role of the junior/middle leader in supporting team equality, diversity and inclusion
- examine the importance of supporting and developing others.
This workshop can be attended on a standalone basis, or learners can also attend the Leading teams and culture in senior medical roles workshop, and together with a short reflective assignment can gain their ‘Doctors as Leaders accreditation’ from the RCP. Details of the assignment are discussed during both workshops, which can be attended in any order.
Learners who have already achieved their Doctors as Leaders accreditation from the RCP will not need to undertake the accreditation again. It is offered during this senior level programme for those who did not complete it, for whatever reason, in the introductory workshops.
