Leading teams and culture in senior medical roles

This intensive one-day workshop will equip experienced medical leaders with the skills to cultivate inclusive workplace cultures within diverse healthcare teams. You will explore the nuances of unconscious bias, explore strategies for fostering psychological safety, and learn to champion equity through inclusive communication and decision making. Through interactive case studies and group discussions, you will develop practical tools for building collaborate environments where every team member feels valued and empowered, ultimately enhancing patient care through a culture of belonging.
Important information prior to an online workshop
Online events include small group discussions and interactive activities. Delegates will get the maximum benefit by being able to fully participate. This means:
- When making your booking we recommend you use an email associated with a Microsoft account. We require delegates to be logged into a Microsoft account to be able to fully participate in small group discussions and interactive activities. You will also need to be logged in to Microsoft for the RCP systems to recognise you and be able to issue you with a Certificate of Attendance.
- Some organisations’ security settings make it difficult to fully participate. If you have previously experienced issues accessing slides, video, audio, or breakout rooms whilst in Teams, please speak to your IT department prior to the event to troubleshoot. You can also contact the RCP to test-run the connections prior to the event. Most NHS accounts are linked to a Microsoft account and generally do not experience issues using Teams. Often home/personal emails are not linked to Microsoft and may not allow full participation.
- You will have the best experience joining the event using a desktop or laptop. Mobile phones and tablets typically do not allow full participation. For best results ensure your device is up-to date with any required software updates.
- You will need a microphone and a camera to fully participate.
This workshop is primarily aimed at consultant level doctors of all specialties and SAS doctors of equivalent experience. It may also be beneficial for those close to CCT with prior leadership training, but we would encourage you to get in touch to confirm suitability.
Alternatively, there are two workshops that are more appropriate for residents and equivalent SAS doctors with less leadership experience:
Fundamentals of self-leadership for doctors
Fundamentals of leading others for doctors
By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- discuss and debate the complexities of workplace culture and examine the challenges facing the NHS
- consider strategies for developing a more inclusive leadership style
- develop ways to create psychological safety in your teams and consider the role compassionate leadership plays in effective leadership
- compare the challenges faced across different specialties when leading multidisciplinary teams and discuss appropriate ways to overcome them
- identify ways you can support and develop others within your team
- reflect on your approach to leading others and develop effective strategies for you to take away with you in the form of an action plan
This workshop can be attended on a standalone basis, or learners can also attend the Developing yourself as a senior medical leader workshop, and together with a short reflective assignment can gain their ‘Doctors as Leaders accreditation’ from the RCP.
Learners who have already achieved their Doctors as Leaders accreditation from the RCP will not need to undertake the accreditation again. It is offered during this senior level programme for those who did not complete it, for whatever reason, in the introductory workshops.
