National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme (NACAP): Adult asthma secondary care case ascertainment

England, Scotland and Wales case ascertainment

Case ascertainment rates for the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme’s adult asthma secondary care audit are calculated based on the number of records entered to the audit compared to data obtained from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Admitted Patient Care (APC) dataset, for England, the electronic Data Research and Innovation Service (eDRIS) held by NHS Scotland and the NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) Patient Episode Database for Wales (PEDW).

We request data in 6-monthly blocks on all instances of completed patient discharge episodes (excluding day cases, but including patients who died as inpatients) from hospitals in England and Wales where the ICD-10 diagnosis codes recommended for the audit were listed as the primary diagnosis (first position) and compared to those for the same period entered to the audit:

  • J45.0 - Predominantly allergic asthma
  • J45.1 - Nonallergic asthma
  • J45.8 - Mixed asthma
  • J45.9 - Asthma, unspecified
  • J46.0 - Status asthmaticus (Includes: Acute severe asthma)

Please find attached appendices explaining how the case ascertainment median was calculated and some examples of good practice.
