This National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline covers assessing and reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE or blood clots) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in people aged 16 and over in hospital. It aims to help healthcare professionals identify people most at risk and describes interventions that can be used to reduce the risk of VTE.
Recommendations
This guideline includes recommendations on:
- assessing the risks of VTE and bleeding
- giving information and planning for discharge
- prophylaxis for all patients, medical patients and surgical and trauma patients
- prophylaxis for pregnant women and women who recently gave birth, had a miscarriage or had a termination of pregnancy.
