The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is seeking a new consultant or SAS doctor representative for its Committee on Ethical Issues in Medicine (CEIM).
You will need to be an early career consultant and be within five years of your first consultant appointment.
Debate over ethical issues arising in medical practice is important to the medical community, with issues discussed by the CEIM over the past few years including:
- assisted dying
- organ donation
- reproductive technologies
- resource allocation
- professional roles
- end-of-life concerns
- gender identity health
- inequalities
The CEIM is made up of fellows, college officers and external members with expertise in ethics, and medical ethics. We are now looking for a new consultant or SAS doctor to join the group chaired by Dr Alexis Paton, Director of the Centre for Health and Society and Senior Lecturer in Social Epidemiology and the Sociology of Health at Aston University. The group meets twice a year.
Eligibility
You must:
- be within five years of your first consultant appointment
- be a subscribing member of the RCP
- be in good standing with the RCP, their employer and the GMC
- be credible to the clinical community
- possess a skillset relevant to the remit of the role (at times this may include ongoing expertise related to the NHS in the United Kingdom).
A formal qualification in medical ethics would be an advantage but is not essential: a willingness to read around the issues and the ability to contribute to discussions are more important.
How to apply
If you are interested in joining, please send your CV and a brief outline of the experience you could bring, to the chair, via the committee manager alison.shore@rcp.ac.uk by COB Wednesday 30 April 2025. Applications will then be considered by the RCP’s Nominations Committee.
