The role

The RDC aims to meet the interests and needs of doctors at an important stage in their career. It also gives resident doctors an opportunity to feed into the development of RCP policy and to contribute to its work. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop management and leadership skills, and to shape physician education and policy at a national level.

The committee's remit is to:

  • Represent the views of resident doctors on all major RCP committees and working groups
  • Provide a channel of two-way communication between local resident doctors and the RCP
  • Send delegates to the Academy Resident Doctors Committee and the BMA Resident Doctors Committee
  • Represent the RCP RDC at other national health related bodies as the need arises
  • Disseminate information to resident doctors and other resident doctor representatives (e.g. specialist society, regional resident doctor bodies, Associate College Tutors) following important discussions and meetings
  • Respond to documents published by other stakeholders in training e.g. Department of Health, the JRCPTB, and the Deans
  • Identify and act on any other areas that may affect the high standard of medical education and training set by the RCP.

The RDC meets three times a year: twice virtually and once in person at the RCP London or RCP Liverpool office.

Eligibility

You can apply to join the RDC for a vacancy in the UK region where you work. You will need to hold a national training number (NTN) for:

  • higher specialty training (ST4 and above)
  • internal medicine training (IMT).

We hope that you will be able to hold office for 24 months or more before your CCT, but it is not a requirement. The maximum term of office is four years.

If you're not already, you'll need to become an RCP subscribing member before taking up office.

How to apply

If you are interested in representing your region, please send the following to committee manager Elaine Storey via elaine.storey@rcp.ac.uk by 5pm on Thursday 31 October 2024:

  • completed application form
  • short statement within the application form (200 words maximum) explaining why you would like to be on the RDC and what relevant skills you can bring
  • short CV (maximum two pages).

If the number of applications for a region received are equal to or fewer than the number of advertised vacancies, the RCP registrar will review the application(s) for suitability with input from the RDC co-chairs. If more applications for a region than vacancies present are received, the RCP Nominations Committee will review them.

The RDC Terms of Reference are attached (to be reviewed by the committee and updated to reflect the recent name change from Trainees Committee to Resident Doctor Committee).

Also attached is the application form.

Please ensure that you are able to take the requisite time away from your Trust.

The RCP positively encourages applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, transgender status, religion or belief, marital status or pregnancy and maternity.

The RCP is all about our people – our members, staff, volunteers and leaders. We educate, influence and collaborate to improve health and healthcare for everyone and know we can only do this by being inclusive, encouraging and celebrating diverse perspectives. Welcoming into our community people who represent the 21st-century medical workforce and the diverse population of patients we serve is a priority for us.
