Diploma in Geriatric Medicine - Clinical Examination Lead

Remit and Responsibilities

The DGM Clinical Examination Lead has the responsibility to ensure that DGM clinical examinations are conducted appropriately and in line with the approved regulations, wider regulatory frameworks (e.g. Equality Act, GDPR) and applicable RCP procedures throughout the lifecycle of the assessment process, including for example:

• Ensuring that DGM clinical examinations are blueprinted on time and in line with the examination regulations and RCP Assessment Unit procedures
• Reviewing results of clinical examinations and providing sign-off for their release to candidates
• Chairing the DGM clinical examination scenario writing group to produce relevant new content on a regular basis, and review existing scenarios as appropriate
• Supporting the RCP Assessment Unit in the selection, appointment, and periodical review of clinical examiners and scenario writers
• Attending the DGM Development Group, as well as other working groups dedicated to the development of the DGM
• Acting as a DGM lead examiner at DGM clinical examinations (held at the Spine, Liverpool)
• Be a member of the DGM Examination Board
• Be involved in the process of candidate appeals and complaints relating to the DGM clinical examination, as well as championing the code of conduct for DGM examiners and supporting the RCP Assessment Unit in the handling of cases of examiner misconduct. 

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply:

• Hold current statutory registration with the relevant regulator - normally the General Medical Council (GMC), Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health & Care Professions’ Council (HCPC), or the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR) in the case of physician associates 1 
• Be in good standing with their regulatory body (or the Faculty of Physician Associates in the case of physician associates)
• Be able to demonstrate the following level of clinical experience: 

• • Clinicians should hold MRCP(UK)/MRCGP/MRCPsych (or equivalent) and have at least five years’ experience in working with older people in a significant proportion of their clinical workload as a consultant or specialist (SAS) in Geriatric Medicine, an old age psychiatrist or a general practitioner.
  • Advanced clinical practitioners should have completed a relevant qualification (a masters degree or equivalent) and have gained at least five years’ clinical experience in working with older people in a significant proportion of their clinical workload after obtaining advanced practitioner status
  • Physician associates should have completed a relevant qualification (a masters degree or equivalent) and at least seven years’ experience in working with older people in a significant proportion of their clinical workload.
• Be actively engaged in the training of junior practitioners to provide high quality person-centred care for older people
• Be up-to-date as appropriate with relevant national guidelines, CPD requirements, employer’s equality and diversity training and appraisal process
• Have previous experience as a DGM examiner and/or board/committee member.
