General medical council registration

All doctors practicing in the UK need to be registered with the general medical council (GMC). Doctors participating in the MTI scheme are able to apply for GMC registration through sponsorship route, the RCP is an approved GMC sponsor.

Please note that, as part of GMC registration, international medical graduates are required to have their primary medical qualification independently verified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) through their online system - known as the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service. Applicants to the MTI scheme will need to set up an online EPIC account and have their qualification verified before we are able to provide GMC sponsorship.

If you have already had your qualification verified by the ECFMG, you will not need to have it verified again, but you will require an EPIC account in order for the GMC to review this.

Please see the GMC website for more information regarding registration.

Visa information

The MTI falls under the government authorised exchange (GAE) visa, previously known as tier 5 visa. This visa is designed for doctors coming to the UK for short term training and can be issued for a maximum of 24 months. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) is the official visa sponsor for the government authorised exchange visa for MTI.

Certificate of sponsorship (CoS) will be issued by the AoMRC. Once it has been issued it is your responsibility to apply for the government authorised exchange visa via the UK Government website.

In certain circumstances, we are able to support candidates on tier 2, tier 4 and British ancestry visas. Candidates need to be able to demonstrate that they have intention to return home on completion of their MTI training and their visa covers the full length of the MTI post.

More information regarding government authorised exchange visa can be found on the UK Government website.
