Overview
General Medical Council (GMC) registration is required in order to perform medical practise in the UK. Temporary full registration with a licence to practise is available to doctors who are eminent overseas specialists with exceptional knowledge and skill in a particular branch or branches of medicine, and who intend to visit the UK for a temporary period to provide medical services of a specialist nature. The maximum registration period is 26 weeks in any period of five years.
Certificate of Introduction
As part of the application for registration, the GMC requires visiting overseas doctor to obtain a Certificate of Introduction from relevant Royal Medical College. The MTI team manages the requests for the Certificate of introduction of an overseas eminent specialist in physician specialties. Application process
Requests for certificate of introduction should be submitted in advance, at least eight weeks before the planned date of the visit.
Following documents need to be submitted to the MTI team for review:
- Completed IMG5 form
- Updated CV – including list of publications, research and awards
- Passport – scanned colour copy of the current passport
- Primary medical qualification (PMQ)
- Postgraduate qualification (PGQ)
- Letter of support – strong letter of support from the UK consultant arranging the visit
- Certificate of good standing (CGS) – from the medical regulatory authority with whom you are currently registered
- Certificate of employment (IMG5) – completed by the medical director of each employing authority or institution for the visit
- Insurance – evidence of adequate insurance or professional indemnity cover
- Purpose of visit – detailed information including itinerary
- Translations – any documents not in English must be translated.
Submission
Please send all required documents via email to mti@rcp.ac.uk. Once received, our team will review the application and complete the Certificate of Introduction form.
