Dr Omar Mustafa announced as the incoming Global vice president

Dr Mustafa is a consultant physician in diabetes and general internal medicine based at King's College Hospital in London. He was appointed as an RCP Global associate global director (AGD) for the Middle East and North Africa in September 2021.

He is an honorary senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London and associate director of medical education at King’s College Hospital (KCH). He is currently the training programme director for the south London endocrinology and diabetes higher specialist training programme and a member of the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board Endocrinology and Diabetes Speciality Advisory Committee.

He has an interest in inpatient diabetes, complex diabetes, health professions and medical education, implementation and improvement science, and digital health. He completed his undergraduate medical studies and foundation training in Iraq and then pursued higher specialist training in endocrinology and diabetes and internal medicine in a number of training centres in the UK. He was appointed a consultant physician at KCH in 2013. He obtained a Master of Health Professions Education from Maastricht University/Suez Canal University.

He continues to work closely with colleagues in Iraq, having initiated positive working relationships in the region and played a role in supporting the development and ongoing work of the RCP Iraq Network. The network was formed in December 2020 with the ambition of improving education and healthcare delivery in Iraq. The network began by ranking 21st in overall international RCP membership, and today ranks 3rd overall – a testament to the network’s commitment and activity.

Speaking about his work with the Global team as AGD for the Middle East and North Africa, Dr Mustafa says: ‘It’s a pleasure to work with colleagues in the RCP Global team and in the Middle East and North Africa on projects to advance medical education in the region in line with RCP strategy, local needs and ambitions.’

He continues: ‘It’s an honour to take up the role of Global vice president. I look forward to continuing to work with members, fellows and stakeholders to continue to develop the global engagement and projects. There is an excellent scope for development and innovations.’
