RCP appoints two new censors

Dr Dan Furmedge and Dr Anita Banerjee have been appointed as new RCP censors. They will take up post on 1 August 2023 and serve for 3 years.

The office of censor is a senior and ancient one going back to the origins of the RCP and Royal Charter of Henry VIII. At any time, there are at least four censors (as well as the education and training vice president, who is also known as the senior censor), and their role has always been concerned with the examination, maintaining standards and education.

The RCP’s new censors:

Dr Dan Furmedge has been a consultant physician in geriatric and internal medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London since 2017 having completed undergraduate training at King’s College London and a Masters in Medical Education at University College London.

He is the current service lead for internal medicine, training programme director for internal medicine training in South London and honorary senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London.

He is experienced in undergraduate and postgraduate assessment. He is an MRCP PACES host, chair and international examiner and sits on the Scenario Editorial Committee and Clinical Examining Board. He is an examiner for the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine. His education interests lie in assessment, postgraduate medical training, appraisal, peer learning and inclusion. He has been RCP college tutor and Trust medical lead for vulnerable adults.

Dr Anita Banerjee is an obstetric physician and diabetes and endocrinology consultant and a honorary reader in obstetric medicine at King’s College University.

She graduated from King's College, London before completing speciality training in North West London. Anita then worked at the Vascular Biology Institute with Gary Striker in Miami researching diabetic nephropathy and Women’s Health. Her main interests are social inequalities, education, obstetric medicine and long-term health conditions.

Anita is actively involved in education, working as the TPD for Internal Medicine Training and is involved in the implementation of the IMT3 program at her trust. She has worked as the deputy director of medical education at her trust, where she has been committed to supporting all educational needs.

She has been the regional advisor for both South London and England. Anita is one of the leading authors of the obstetric medicine diploma and has also co-authored the RCP acute care toolkit on managing acute medical problems in pregnancy, where she is continuing to develop blended training packages for obstetric medicine. She has co-produced and led innovative educational programmes across many aspects of medicine.

Two censors will demit at the end of July and thanks are due to Dr Manish Gautam and Dr Catherine Sargent as they approach the end of their terms.
