The RCP and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) have launched the Diploma in UK Medical Practice (DipUKMP), a professional diploma open to all international trainees working in an NHS trust as part of the RCP’s Medical Training Initiative (MTI).
The Medical Training Initiative provides junior doctors from all over the world with the opportunity to work and train in an NHS trust for up to 2 years. The programme has grown steadily since its establishment in 2009 with nearly 280 junior doctors now working in the UK on RCP-arranged placements. The RCP’s role is to interview applicants, match successful candidates to posts in the UK, and facilitate General Medical Council (GMC) registration and visa sponsorship.
The Diploma in UK Medical Practice, led academically by LSTM's senior clinical lecturer and NHS consultant Dr Clare van Halsema, has been introduced to enable participants to fully demonstrate the value and breadth of experience gained during their placement.
To be awarded the Diploma, participants are required to carefully document their training using the ePortfolio system, complete a range of continuing medical education sessions, and submit a written reflection piece at the end of their placement.
RCP president Professor Jane Dacre said:
The Medical Training Initiative provides an excellent opportunity for UK and overseas doctors to learn from one another. I’m very pleased that the diploma will help participants demonstrate the extent to which they have developed during their placement.
The first trainees are expected to register for the diploma at the upcoming MTI induction (a GMC-endorsed introduction to UK practice) on 4 July and, if successful, will be awarded the diploma at a ceremony at the RCP in summer 2018.
Registration for this diploma is now closed. To learn more about the Medical Training Initiative click here.
