NHS England today announced that it will expand ‘Martha’s Rule’ in hospitals across England from April.
Following the death of Martha Mills from sepsis in 2021, the patient safety initiative was created to allow patients and families to seek an urgent review if their condition deteriorates.
John Dean, RCP clinical vice president, said:
"Despite an ever-increasing workload, we know NHS doctors and the wider team work incredibly hard for their patients. Martha's Rule is a welcome reminder that, even under pressure, listening to the concerns of patients and their loved ones is a key part of the role. We support the expansion of the pilot as a welcome step for patient safety, and are guided in this area by our experts in acute deterioration.”
