The RCP has responded to confirmation that the Tobacco and Vapes Bill has not been included in ‘wash-up’, the set of bills expedited through parliament before the next general election.
Commenting on the exclusion of the Bill, Professor Sanjay Agrawal, the RCP's special adviser on tobacco, said:
“While it’s certainly disappointing to see the Tobacco and Vapes Bill excluded from the Commons schedule, we’re hopeful that whoever forms the next government will take it forward.
“This Bill has the potential to save tens of thousands of lives and the NHS billions of pounds. It already has the support of all four Chief Medical Officers in the United Kingdom and is set to be one of the most monumental public health interventions the government will have made in decades.
“We look forward to seeing the next government expedite this vital legislation as a matter of urgency.”
