Sir Richard was elected from a field of six candidates by single transferable vote, the result having been made public as College Day (29th March 2010) drew to a close.
Sir Richard is an Emeritus Consultant Gastroenterologist at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital. He will succeed Professor Ian Gilmore into the office on the 27th of July. Professor Gilmore remains president of the College until then.
In addition to his current role as RCP treasurer Sir Richard was the Queen's physician and has served the College as MRCP Examiner, Censor, Councillor and sat on a number of specialist committees. He is a Governor at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Trust and sits on the boards of several charities.
On learning of his appointment Sir Richard said:
I am delighted to have been chosen by the Fellowship to lead the College at this crucial time. The growth in spending over the past decade is now at an end and for many of the Fellowship and Membership this will create major challenges. Furthermore changes in the form of care closer to home, the national quality agenda and productivity challenges are unfolding with increasing momentum. Physicians have the necessary skills and experience to lead this process as clinical practice changes and it is vital that the contribution we have to make be recognised.
Congratulating Sir Richard on his election win, Professor Gilmore said:
I am delighted to be succeeded by such an experienced and committed physician as Sir Richard, who is well equipped to take the College into an era where high quality patient care will be centre stage.
