Under each KPI, a series of case studies has been listed. There is also a case study template for services to complete and send to falls@rcp.ac.uk or fffap@rcp.ac.uk listed below. The information provided will be written as a narrative and returned to you for approval before being published.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • KPI 1: High-quality multifactorial assessment to optimise safe activity (MASA)

This is a score calculated from adding together six assessment components for each patient (vision, lying and standing blood pressure (LSBP), medication, delirium, mobility, and continence). A maximum score of six indicates that all were completed for that patient. A score of five or more is considered a high-quality assessment.

The components of the MASA are described in more detail here.

New case study

The improvement project team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust targeted to improve the compliance of taking LSBP readings at the Albert Ward, which is a component of NAIF's KPI 1: MASA quality score.

Post-fall management

  • KPI 2: Check for injury before moving from the floor and an injury is suspected

Is there documented evidence in the clinical notes that the patient was checked for signs or symptoms of potential for head, spinal injury and fracture before they were moved?

  • KPI 3: Appropriate moving and handling method used to move the patient from the floor

What moving and handling method was used to move the patient following the fall that caused the injury(ies)?

  • KPI 4: Medical assessment within 30 minutes of the fall

Is there documented evidence that the patient had a medical assessment within 30 minutes following fall that resulted in the injury(ies)?
